VPN marketing has a tendency to answer this question with "obviously yes, for everything, all the time" — which isn't really honest, and it undersells the cases where a VPN genuinely does matter by burying them under vague fear-based claims. Where a VPN genuinely helps
Public and untrusted Wi-Fi
Coffee shops, airports, hotels — any network you don't control and don't fully trust. A VPN encrypts your entire connection over that network, closing the metadata leak that even HTTPS-only browsing leaves open (which domains you're visiting) and neutralizing a lot of what a rogue or compromised access point could otherwise see. Without a VPN, your internet provider can see which domains you connect to (even if not the specific pages, when HTTPS is used) as a routine part of how your connection works, and in some markets that data has real commercial value to them for advertising or analytics purposes, or gets retained under local regulation. A VPN removes your ISP from that position entirely — they see an encrypted connection to a VPN server and nothing else. Getting around ISP throttling
Some ISPs slow down specific types of traffic — streaming, gaming, torrenting — based on being able to identify it. Because a VPN hides the type and destination of your traffic from your ISP (it just sees encrypted data to a VPN server), traffic-specific throttling that depends on the ISP recognizing what kind of traffic it's looking at often doesn't apply once it's tunneled. Accessing geo-restricted content

Where a VPN doesn't help — and people often assume it does
It's not anonymity
A VPN changes which IP address sites see and which network operator can see your traffic's destination — it doesn't make you anonymous. And the moment you log into any account — email, social media, a store — that service knows it's you, VPN or not.
It doesn't stop cookies or browser fingerprinting
Websites can identify and track you through mechanisms that have nothing to do with your IP address: cookies, browser and device fingerprinting (a combination of your screen size, installed fonts, browser version, and dozens of other small signals that's often unique enough to identify a specific browser), and cross-site tracking scripts. A VPN doesn't touch any of that — it operates at the network level, while fingerprinting operates at the browser/application level. Blocking that kind of tracking requires browser-level tools (tracker blockers, privacy-focused browser settings), not a VPN.
It doesn't replace password hygiene or two-factor authentication
Encrypting the connection your password travels over doesn't help if the password itself is weak, reused across sites, or exposed in a data breach unrelated to your network at all. A VPN and a password manager (plus two-factor authentication) solve different problems; neither substitutes for the other.
It doesn't make illegal activity legal or untraceable
Worth saying plainly: a VPN changes who can observe your traffic in transit, not the legal status of what you do with it, and it's not a guarantee against being identified through other means (account logins, payment trails, behavioral patterns) even where it does hide your IP.
It's not a substitute for antivirus or safe browsing habits
A VPN encrypts and reroutes your network traffic — it doesn't scan files for malware, block phishing pages, or stop you from downloading something malicious. Some VPN tiers bundle in DNS-level ad, tracker, or malware-domain blocking as a separate feature layered on top of the tunnel, which is genuinely useful, but that's a distinct feature from the VPN's core job, not an inherent property of "using a VPN." If a VPN app doesn't explicitly advertise that kind of blocking, assume it isn't doing it.
The honest bottom line
If you regularly use public or untrusted Wi-Fi, care about keeping general browsing patterns away from your ISP, run into traffic-based throttling, or want to access region-locked content, a VPN does something real and specific for you. If what you're actually looking for is broad online anonymity or protection from tracking-by-fingerprinting, a VPN alone won't get you there — that requires a different, complementary set of tools.
